The research

Why a timeline you can touch

One Current draws what is on your mind as threads branching off your life's one line — and lets you act on them. That design is not decoration. It sits on three well-studied ideas from psychology and human–computer interaction. This page walks through them in plain language, with the sources underneath.

One honest thing before anything else: One Current is informed by this evidence. The app itself has not been through a clinical trial, and it is not a treatment. Every claim below cites the study it comes from — including the ones that complicate the story.

Thread one

A split you can see

The timeline's defining move — a thread visibly forking away from your main line — is a picture of the most studied engine in the psychology of self-change.

Your mind runs a quiet comparison all day: the person you are being against the person you intend to be. Psychologists call the difference a self-discrepancy, and a long line of work shows the discrepancy itself — not vague guilt, not willpower — is what moves people: we are motivated by the gap between our actual path and a possible one we can still picture.

But there is a catch: imagining the better path alone does little. What works in randomized trials is holding the desired future and the present obstacle in view at the same time — a technique called mental contrasting. And thinking about the path not taken is not brooding: research on counterfactual thought finds its main day-job is behavior regulation — "what might have been" quietly becomes "what I will do next."

One Current draws exactly this: your intended line and the thread pulling away from it, on one canvas, at the same time. And when a thread completes, it curves back and rejoins your line — which matters more than it looks. A study of how apps represent broken progress found the drawing itself changes behavior: breaks shown as repairable keep people going; breaks shown as final make them quit. Nothing in One Current is drawn as final.

Honest note: mental contrasting and self-discrepancy have strong trial and theory support; the "repairable break" finding comes from consumer research on streak-style logs, and we extend it to timelines by analogy.

Thread two

Out of the head, onto the line

A worry you are holding is a process. A worry you have drawn is an object. Objects can be named, moved, set down, and changed — and there is converging evidence that each of those acts changes how the worry feels.

Start with naming. In brain-imaging work, simply putting a feeling into words dampens the amygdala — the brain's alarm — while recruiting the prefrontal region that does the labeling. In a clinical experiment with spider phobia, people who labeled their fear during exposure showed calmer physiology a week later than people who reappraised or distracted. Naming is not nothing; it is regulation.

Then externalize. A classic problem: unfinished business intrudes — the mind rehearses open loops uninvited. But experiments show the intrusions stop when the loop is written down as a concrete plan, even though nothing has been done yet. The mind does not need the task finished. It needs the task held somewhere it trusts. That is what a thread on your timeline is: an open loop the app is now holding, so your head does not have to.

Then make it a thing apart from you. Narrative therapy built a whole practice on one sentence — "the person is not the problem; the problem is the problem" — because a problem that stands apart from you is one you can have a relationship with, instead of an identity. And once it is a thing, you can act on it: we rotate puzzle pieces in the world because it is cheaper than rotating them in the head; in one striking experiment, people who wrote a thought on paper and threw the paper away were measurably less influenced by that thought afterwards. A 2024 VR study took this literally — participants grabbed object-versions of their negative thoughts and sorted or discarded them, and reported less negative affect and more distance from the thoughts.

Why draw it, specifically? Because imagery has privileged access to emotion: pictures move feeling more than sentences do, in both directions — and the best-tested consequence is that changing a distressing image changes the distress (imagery-rescripting trials show large effects). Finally, the thread you can act on feeds the variable that tracks anxiety most reliably across disorders: the sense that you have some control. In a meta-analysis of 51 studies, low perceived control ran through every anxiety disorder examined.

Honest notes: the "consider it done" studies externalized tasks and plans, not free-floating anxieties — the extension to worries is an inference. The thoughts-as-objects experiments are suggestive rather than settled, and the VR study was small and single-session. Naming and offloading are the strong links; manipulating is the promising one.

Thread three

Play that lowers the guard

Pip, the bonk, the charge meter — the playful layer is engineered from what the trials actually support, and it deliberately leaves out what they warn against.

Games can carry real interventions. In a randomized trial, an anxiety-regulation game for children matched a gold-standard CBT program at follow-up; a decade earlier, a fantasy game delivering CBT proved non-inferior to face-to-face care for depressed adolescents in the BMJ. The form works.

But the honest reading of the meta-analyses is humbling: game elements by themselves are not the medicine. Across 38 studies, gamified mental-health apps did not outperform plain ones on symptoms. Where gamification earns its keep is adherence — in one three-arm RCT, the gamified app had roughly four times the odds of keeping people on protocol — and adherence matters because engaging with reflection at all is what predicts improvement.

The flavor of play matters too. Calm, casual play reduces measured state anxiety — heart rate, blood pressure, self-report — across multiple trials and a systematic review. Gentle, good-natured playfulness regulates negative emotion better than sharp humor, and mild amusement measurably speeds the body's recovery after anxiety. A small creature who soothes your worries — never mocks them — is that finding, drawn.

And what is missing from One Current is missing on purpose. Leaderboards and badges eroded intrinsic motivation over a semester in a controlled comparison. Streaks correlate with obligation and fear of missing out in adolescents. So there are no leaderboards, no streaks to lose, nothing that punishes a bad day — the super-bonk meter only ever fills, and a thread only yields bonk-charge once an hour, so the reward stays tied to real reflection instead of grinding.

Honest notes: most game trials are in children and adolescents; several strong studies found control games improved anxiety too; and one review found no reliable adherence benefit from gamification at all — so the engagement claim is "evidence suggests," not "evidence proves."

Where the three threads meet

Each literature on its own is incomplete. Read together, they describe one design — and it is this one.

Seeing motivates, but does not soothe

The visible gap between your line and your thread is the engine of change — but a gap you can only stare at can also just sit there and hum.

Holding soothes, but does not sustain

Naming and externalizing quiet the alarm — but a journal you stop opening stops working. The evidence says the hard part is coming back.

Play sustains, but means nothing alone

Game loops keep people returning — and the meta-analyses show that without real reflection underneath, that is all they do.

That is the argument for this design in one sentence: the timeline puts the motivating gap on screen; the threads make each worry a nameable, holdable, answerable object; and the playful layer — a companion, a soothing bonk, a meter that only fills — keeps you returning to the part that actually helps, which is the minute of honest reflection.

The working theory

The Graspability Hypothesis

Cross-referencing these literatures points at one idea that has been sitting in plain sight — inside the language you already use about your own mind.

Every one of those is a hand word. Cognitive linguists showed decades ago that we understand abstract things through physical metaphors — and the metaphor the whole species picked for thoughts is objects handled by hands. The research above suggests this is not just a manner of speaking. Naming a worry (getting a grip) calms the alarm. Writing it down (putting it down) stops the rehearsal. Acting on its written form (throwing it away) weakens it. Feeling able to act on it at all tracks anxiety across every disorder measured.

So here is the hypothesis One Current is built on, stated plainly:

A feeling becomes regulable roughly in proportion to how graspable its representation is. The mind manages what the hand could manage — so give the mind a hand-shaped interface to itself.

The idioms were the clue, sitting under everyone's noses: language has always described emotional regulation as object handling, and each verb in that vocabulary turns out to have its own supporting literature. One Current simply takes the idioms literally — it gives every worry a body you can name, a line you can drag, a weight you can set down, and a way home you can watch happen.

To be clear about its status: this is One Current's working theory. Every link in the chain has published evidence behind it, cited above. The chain as a whole — draw, grasp, act, settle — has not been tested end to end by anyone. This app is its test bench, not its proof.
